| Short Statement: | I believe that where displacement is a legal compulsion, leaving resettlement and rehabilitation to executive mercy, with the hope that it will adhere to the policy guidelines developed either domestically or internationally, is wrong. Unless the legal system and its instrumentalities, including the courts, explicitly accept that people do possess “a right not to be arbitrarily displaced” and create legal and institutional readiness to arrest the abuse of "eminent domain" and create mechanism for the respect of basic human rights wherever displacement becomes unavoidable, we will not be able to address the problem of involuntary displacement holistically. It is my feeling that as the judiciary in many countries is not sufficiently educated on the issue, it has not been able to use the existing legal tools to mitigate the rigor of displacement. Therefore, it is imperative to work towards bringing the judiciary on the side of the oppressed and displaced. I don’t know whether it is a great idea but I feel strongly committed to this. | Cote d'Ivoire:Protest by Social Scientists |
| A large group of West Africa, Europe, and North American academics and social scientists, many of whom are students of population displacement, have signed onto an editorial written and circulated by a group of West African academics and social scientists. They argue that the former President of Cote d'Ivoire, Laurent Gbagbo, is abusively clinging to power after having blatantly tried to falsifiy the recent elections. The point out that international bodies have confirmed that the opposition candidate, Alassane Ouattara, has defeated Gbagbo. Nonetheless, the Gbagbo and his military supporters prevent the access to power of the newly-elected President. The likelihood of renewed violent conflict, civil war, and bloodshed in Cote d'Ivoire is high and increasing, involving obvious risks of renewed massive uprooting and population displacement. |
