Short Statement: Short Statement
As a Sociologist I have taught post-Graduate students for more than 20 years. Currently I am on leave from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar and located in the Faculty of Social Sciences at University Malaysia, Sarawak, Malaysia. I tend to believe that Sociologists/Anthropologists, like me, who do prolonged and intensive fieldwork in different social settings and also have varied experience teaching students of different socio-cultural background have not only the responsibility to tell what it(social reality) is thought to be, explain what it is but also to propagate what it would be and what it ought to be. The unpleasant truth of life is that people with power and prosperity muzzle the voice of the conscientious social scientists and sometimes the latter themselves surrender to the former. The issue of development-induced displacement is a burning one in my own state in Orissa, India. It is very rich in natural resources but one of the poorest among the major states in India. There is large disparity within the different parts of the state. Natural factors apart, man-made designs—in the garb of development—are responsible for the underdevelopment of the state. This fractured and fragmented image inspired, rather compelled, me to understand the process of social reconstruction of the oustees and affected persons of the Hirakud Dam, the longest earthen dam in the world.
